Brasstown Bald - Arkaquah Trail Hike with Ben Cash

 Enjoy the spring wildflowers . . .Hike a maintained trail on a high elevation ridge. Expect a great variety of spring wildflowers plus mountain maple, fire cherry, Catawba rhododendron, American mountain ash, sunburst lichen, rock harlequin, and maybe a raven in an area that has had wilderness designation for almost a quarter of a century. Optionally, we may briefly leave the trail to see points of interest. Date of Outing: May 15, 2010
Meeting Time, Place, and Directions:
Meet at 10:00 a.m. at
the Trackrock Gap.
Directions: From US Hwy 19 & 129, north of Vogel State Park, turn east onto GA Hwy 180 towards Brasstown Bald and go approximately 2½ mi. Turn left onto Town Creek School Rd and go about 5¼ mi. Turn right onto Trackrock Gap Rd and go approximately 4 mi to the small parking area on the left. From here we'll shuttle to the parking lot on Brasstown Bald where a fee is charged.

Outing Location: Union County, and almost entirely within the Brasstown Wilderness Area. USGS Quadrangles: Blairsville GA-NC, Hiawassee GA-NC, Jacks Gap GA
Distance and Difficulty:
5½ to 6 miles. Moderate to strenuous with about 2,500 net elevation loss.
Bring:
Lunch, lots of water, rain gear, and appropriate clothing and footwear, etc. (Allergic to bees/wasps?) Remember your meds/epi-pen.
