Start Your Spring with a Visit to the Big Trees!

 | This hike is not to be missed...Join ForestWatch Executive Director Wayne Jenkins for a rare opportunity to experience old
growth cove forest. Most of our old growth findings have been dryer, Chestnut
Oak ridge forest communities, but on this hike come prepared to visit some huge Poplar, Hemlock,
Oak and White Pine cove forests. We will be taking
our time on this special outing to experience one of the more easily accessible old growth areas we have
found in the Chattahoochee National Forest. Date of Outing: Saturday, March 27 Meeting Time, Place, and Directions: Meet at 9:00 a.m. at
the Georgia ForestWatch office
Directions: Hwy 52, 1 mile west of the Ellijay round-about,
toward Fort Mountain State Park.
Turn right onto Tower Rd.
and then immediately left into our parking lot.

Outing Location: Old
Growth Hike into upper Mill Creek watershed of the Ed Jenkins National
Recreation Area/Chattahoochee National Forest, Noontootla USGS Quadrangle
Distance and Difficulty: Moderate to
difficult. The drive in is about an hour on Forest Service dirt roads. We will be out most of the day, returning to the
office parking lot by between 4 and 6 pm.
Bring: Lunch,
water, rain gear, walking staff if needed, and appropriate clothing and
footwear. Camera if desired. (Allergic to bees/wasps? Remember your
meds/epi-pen.)
