group of wilderness advocates at the Fall Retreat!

We
are thrilled to announce that Doug Scott, Manager of Policy and Research for the Campaign for America's
Wilderness, Pew Environment Group, will be among our featured speakers
Doug Scott is a leading expert on wilderness
preservation in the United States. He
has been involved in the congressional enactment of many major wilderness protection
laws over the last 45 years, including the Eastern
Wilderness Areas Act (1975) and the newest- the Omnibus Public Land
Management Act (2009). His two books, The Enduring Wilderness and Our Wilderness: America's Common Ground, examine our relationship with wilderness and offer a strong case for permanent protection of our wild lands.
Along
with our own Brent Martin, past ForestWatch Director and now working for new
wilderness in NC, Doug will assist the 'New
Wilderness' Panel to examine the history, current status and opportunities for building an expanded
Wilderness future for Georgia. We will aim to create a strategy to guide our wildlands protection work
going forward.
The 'New Wilderness' Panel includes:
Brent Martin of The Wilderness Society Sally Bethea of Upper Chattahoochee Riverkeeper Will Wingate of the Georgia Conservancy, Bob Kerr, former Executive
Director of the Georgia Conservancy Doug Scott of Campaign for America's Wilderness Wayne Jenkins of Georgia ForestWatch

SPEND A BEAUTIFUL SEPTEMBER WEEKEND WITH US: GREAT FOOD, TREE CLIMBING, YOUTH NATURE ARTS PROGRAM, HIKES AND MORE!
Join us at Vogel State Park in Blairsville on September 25th for our 'New Wilderness' panel, hikes, tree climbing, art, great food, music around the campfire and camaraderie with fellow ForestWatchers!
This year we are offering a children's program concurrent with the morning and afternoon
events. Two sessions, led by Lori Jenkins, middle school art teacher,
naturalist and artist, will have our younger ForestWatchers creating primitive
charcoal leaf prints, journaling books, watercolor art, sun-prints, and tie-dye
bandanas! Program
fee is $10 for the morning session and $15 for the afternoon, and each
session is limited to 18 participants. Families with more than one
child participating receive half-price discounts for each additional
child.
The afternoon will bring an offering of hikes and non-hike programs, including tree climbing-experience a whole new view of the forest! We will have plenty of time for enjoying the scenery and socializing with new and old friends as we enjoy great food, including a full barbecue dinner with all the fixins! Music around the campfire will round out the evening, so bring your instruments and join in!
An RSVP is required! Call or E-MAIL to secure your spot for this event.
Come for Saturday or join us for the whole weekend-we have a number of campsites and cabins still available. We will host a potluck dinner on Friday and a hike on Sunday for those who are not quite ready to leave the mountains!
COST: $20 per person (kids 12 and under FREE) includes all programming, light breakfast, hearty
lunch, and full barbecue dinner! There is an additional $5 parking fee for the park. Arts in nature youth
program and weekend camping/cabin accommodations are available at additional costs.
