A Hike with a Plants-Eye View! Join Patricia Kyritsi Howell, author of Medicinal Plants of the Southern
Appalachians, for a hike to learn about the many native plants found in our
north Georgia
forests in late summer. We should see plenty of edible and medicinal plants, as
well as mushrooms,
along the trail.

Meeting Time, Place, and Directions: We will meet at 9:30 AM, at
the Ingles parking lot in Clayton,
GA: The address is 176 Highway 441 North, just north of the intersection of West Savannah St. and Highway 441 in Clayton. Outing
Location:
Two trails are under consideration in the Betty's Creek area of the Chattahoochee National
Forest in Rabun County in the northeastern corner of Georgia. The trails will be scouted again closer to the hike date and we will take the one that has more plant action!
Distance and Difficulty:
This moderate hike is 2.5 miles. This hike will be fairly leisurely in pace but
there are a few steep uphill
stretches on parts of the trails, so participants should be able to
walk on uneven terrain at a moderate pace without physical difficulty.
Limit: 15
Bring:
Long pants (poison ivy along the trail)
Hiking shoes with good traction
Picnic lunch or snacks
Water
Something to sit on
Insect repellent (non-toxic, please!)
Sunscreen & hat
Raincoat (it rains in Rabun County
almost every day!)
First Aid supplies
Optional:
Wildflower and mushroom field guides
(Patricia's favorite is
Newcomb's Wildflower Guide)
Camera
Magnifying glass
Walking stick
Notebook and pen
Anything you might need to be comfortable for several
hours in the woods
(Allergic to bees/wasps?
Remember your meds/epi-pen.)
Rain Date: This outing takes place rain or shine (except lightning), and hikers will be notified if an outing is canceled
